When Regrouting Is the Right Answer
Regrouting makes sense when the tiles themselves are in good condition — intact, not cracked, and still well-adhered — but the grout has failed. Signs that you’re a great candidate for regrouting:
- Grout is discoloured, stained, or mouldy but the tiles look fine
- Grout is cracked or crumbling in places
- There are isolated missing sections of grout
- The existing grout colour has aged and you want to refresh the look
- Water is coming through but the tiles themselves are solid

When Tile Replacement Makes More Sense
Sometimes replacement is unavoidable:
- Cracked or broken tiles — Regrouting won’t fix a cracked tile, and a crack allows water through just like failed grout.
- Hollow or loose tiles — If tiles have lifted from the substrate, the adhesive has failed. Regrouting is a band-aid solution at best.
- Significant water damage to the substrate — If water has been getting through for a long time, the substrate (the surface under the tiles) may be rotten or compromised. In this case, even new tiles need a new base.
- Widespread tile failure — If more than 30% of tiles are damaged, replacement is often more economical than piecemeal repairs.
- Outdated tiles affecting property value — Sometimes a full refresh makes sense for resale value.
